[At least she looks appropriately ashamed as she tries to kind of sliiiiiide on past Joker]

Gunny.

[He has the mom-voice going in full force. It's like the parental equivalent of dropping a tactical nuke.]

Don't you even think about going anywhere. We're gonna have a talk.

[And like any good mom voice, it stops her right in her tracks, although she doesn't dare turn around just yet. Not when she has a chance to make a break for the crew quarters]

Maybe now wouldn't be a good time... I mean... um...

[Nope. She's got nothing.]

Now, Gunny.

[Nope, not having any of it. The two of you are going to talk and that's final, young lady.]

[Gunny also looks like she's fully expecting a can of whoop-ass to open right in her face]

Yessir.

Go to the helm.

[Because then he can close the door and even if someone comes aboard, they won't be bothered. And also they probably won't hear the inevitable yelling.]

[This is kind of like being sent to Dad's 'office']

[But Gunny's pretty well trained in that area, too-- she knows if she disobeys now, there's going to be hell to pay later]

[So, with her head hung low, she shuffles on over to the helm]

[He follows along behind her, then shuts the door once they're in the helm.]

[Gunny wrings her hands before murmuring something unintelligible that may or may not be a confession of guilt]

I, um, skipped a few classes.

Yeah, I noticed.

Mind telling me why you thought that attendance didn't apply to you anymore? Because maybe it's just me getting forgetful in my old age, but I'm pretty sure we already had this conversation before. So there must've been something in that previous discussion that wasn't made real clear to you.

Okay look, look... I, um, I already wasn't really going in before we talked, and I figured that going in after wouldn't really help, so... I just figured I could go back later and start over. And it wasn't like they were teaching me anything good, anyway.

And since I've been working with Lady Une with that secretary job on weekends, I thought that, um, maybe I could just do that full-time instead. It'd probably be more helpful money wise, and then I won't be doing busy work when I got home, and then we could focus on my flight lessons and stuff.

That's not how this is gonna work.

[It would be really nice if, for once, Gunny would actually listen to the words that come out of his mouth.]

You seem to have forgotten this thing where you're fifteen and your job is to go to class. So here's what's gonna happen: you don't go to school, you don't fly. And if you keep not going, I'm gonna have to have a talk with Une, and then you're gonna have all sorts of time to do your schoolwork. Are we clear?

What?! No! Jeff, that's not fair!

[FOOT STAMP]

That doesn't change anything.

Gunny, you can't get out of school just because you don't like it and you'd rather do other things.

I'm saying that they're not teaching me anything good, and that it'd be better if I'm doing something useful instead!

Must be real great to know everything already.

[She was at a high school on a space station where there was vastly different technology, they had to be teaching something that she hadn't heard before.]

[It was pretty clear that this conversation wasn't going to go anywhere but downhill, so ending it was probably the best idea.]
